My older brother, Denis, was born in Liverpool in 1927. He joined the RAF in 1943 and served as a Regular Officer, mainly on flying duties, until he retired from the RAF in 1973. He was very fortunate in spending most of his career on long-range transport aircraft which gave him the opportunity to visit very many parts of the world during his service career. His consuming hobby was always music, which resulted in him frequently being appointed to organise and maintain bands on various RAF stations. Together with his wife, Jean, and daughters Angela and Pauline, he emigrated to Australia and settled in Brisbane, Queensland.
The music hobby eventually took over completely and he became very involved in the ‘big band’ scene in Brisbane, as well as being a music teacher and school band director. Until recently, Denis was simultaneously MD of 3 major ‘swing’ bands, including the ‘official’ Australian Glenn Miller Tribute Band, in which he also played the baritone saxophone (seen here with Denis in front of the Jeep).
